Follistim Emergency

An update is coming, but Im having a little Follistim emergency. I was prescribed 300IU/night. Last night was the first one. I loaded up my cartridge that is labeled 300 IU, turned the dial to 300 and did the shot. Today, we realized the cartridge was not empty, so we used what was left before putting a new one on. There was about 100 IU left over..seems like a lot to me?! I administered 300 IU last night and 300 tonight. So, my second cartridge still has liquid in it. How does that make sense? Should I just use the rest of the cartridge tonight? Thoughts? Opinions? HELP!

Don't know if this helps, but I quickly searched online and found info about Follistim that says "The Follistim AQ Cartridge may be OVERFILLED." That might mean that though it's a 300IU cartridge it might have some extra... why? I'm not sure... I'd call the doc tomorrow to see what to do. (And probably use the extra myself just because I do sneaky things like that.)

Thinking good thoughts for you!

We used Follistim for our little guy and he just turned a year - SO unless they are different now, here is my take.....There should be a small amount left over if you are taking the entire 300 because they put 'extra' in there for when you prime the needle before taking the shot, etc. However, thinking back, when we did ours there would not be enough to do another shot in the morning so who knows......knowing me (and how I worry about everything) I would probably ask one of the nurses to be safe.

My RE told me they always put extra in the vials. If you don't mind stabbing yourself twice, you can do what's left (just dial it until it stops) and then start a whole new vial for the remainder of the 300IU you'll need. I had the same issue, and I brought my unfinished vials to my RE's office to put in 2 so that I wouldn't have to stab myself twice towards the end of my Follistim usage. Hope that helps!

I agree with what everyone typed... go ahead and use up the 2nd cartridge, but make sure you are still doing 300IU and draw from another cartridge to make sure you have enough. That stuff is liquid gold! Don't waste a drop if you can help it!

My Follistim cartridges were always WAY over filled. Sometimes there would be almost 200 left in them. (But I had the 900's) My nurse said to dial up your correct dose and inject until it stops....then look at what number it is on and that is how much from a new cartridge you need to inject. Hope this helps!

Hi I've been following you, but I just wanted to say don't worry, that exact same thing happened to me when going through ivf to conceive our twins. Of course I freaked out and called the emergency line where the Dr then told me that they over fill them so not to worry. I know its hard cause I remember totally crying thinking I just ruined the whole thing. I'm keeping you guys in prayers!

No worries, they always put extra in each cartridge. Just make sure you dial 300, use what is left in the last cartridge, it will only dial "down" what you use, put in a new cartridge, and then push the rest in, it will only do what's left for your original dosage.

I had almost an extra 300 in each of my cartridges! You can start the next one and then inject the leftovers all into one! My nurse also told me to always order the smaller vials because they overfill them more than the big ones that hold 900.

I was going to write the exact same thing. When we did Follistim they told us about the extra in the cartridge as well. I always used what was left and then started a new one.

Oh hun...they totally overfill the cartrige. You should only administer the dose your dr. tells you to take, and you will for sure notice left overs in the cartrige. I usually had enough left over to use for the next days dose, totally normal :)

My nurse told me that the cartridges have exactly 100 iu more than it states on the box. So I think you are doing everything just right. Good luck!!

No it's fine! Don't worry. I had so much leftover follistim. Just do your prescribed dose. The cartridges are not filled to exactly your dosage because your dose may be changed by your doctor as your cycle progresses. It's totally fine, don't worry!!

Dammit, I cannot find my post where I wrote about this, but they over fill those stupid things and NO ONE TOLD US EITHER! Use what's left and use the rest out of the next. You've just got to measure right with that pen and it will be right. I don't know what no one says anything about them being overfilled... SO ANNOYING!

This exact thing happened to me! I ended up buying more Follistim than needed because I was afraid to use what was left over in the cartridges!!! Grrr. But yes, like everyone else is saying..there is more in the cartridge than what it says.

I think they always overfill so I wouldn't stress too much.
